The California Governor's Office declared a state of emergency in response to the incident, and a combination of efforts resulted in the leak being plugged on February 18th, 2016.

Nord Stream Pipeline – Baltic Sea: On September 27th, 2022, two natural gas pipelines— Nord Stream 1 and 2— burst in the Baltic Sea between Russia and Germany. Though it is impossible to measure exactly how much methane was released into the atmosphere, experts estimated hundreds of thousands of tons of gas were emitted during the incident. This burst is widely recognized as the largest ever recorded in history. The pipelines were since shut down and repaired to stop the leak.

Equitrans Storage Well – Pittsburg, PA: On November 3rd, 2022, a 13-day methane leak from a vent on a natural gas storage well occurred at Equitrans Midstream Corp., which emitted nearly 1 billion cubic feet of greenhouse gas into the atmosphere. This incident rivaled that of the Aliso Canyon leak as the worst case of a natural gas leak in American history. Though the leak was fixed, their slow response was widely criticized, especially by the International Energy Agency.
