Here's What You Need to Know

Local Law 157 (LL 157) is a New York City ordinance that requires natural gas alarms to be installed in residential buildings by January 1, 2027

WHO MUST COMPLY WITH LL157?

Private dwellings: Permanent dwellings/apartments/homes

Class A multiple dwellings: One and two-family houses

Class B multiple dwellings: Transient housing-hotels, lodging houses, dorms, etc.

The installation of natural gas alarms in residential buildings helps reduce the risk of undetected gas leaks and explosions. Responsibility primarily falls on building owners, with defined roles for tenants.

Property Owner Responsibilities:
Install compliant natural gas alarms
- Ensure alarms are properly located
- Replace alarms at the end of their useful life
- Comply with manufacturer and NFPA 715 standards

Tenant Responsibilities:
- Maintaining alarms during occupancy
- Replacing alarms that are: Removed, missing, damaged, or inoperable

Alarms Must Comply with NFPA715 Installation

  • Placement should be on or within 12 inches from the ceiling On the wall within 12 inches of the ceiling or on the ceiling
  • Alarms should be horizontally placed 3-10 feet from the gas appliance
  • Alarms should be 5-10 feet horizontally from gas stoves
